Hi Everyone! My seed talk is tomorrow night!!! It is Wed Feb 28, 2018 at 7:30 in the Wellington Room of Centre 2000. That is at the far end of the arena lobby. I will talk about starting plants from seed, and also about saving seeds in the fall. It is also the garden club penny sale night. That is fun. As I said before, it is only for garden club members, but it is a great idea to become a garden club member. It is just $10 for 2018, you can pay Wed. Upcoming talks are on vegetable gardening, hellebores and irises. Workshops are on planting an herb container, making kindness rocks, and a Christmas craft. There are judged flower shows and photography shows. The membership card also gets you discounts for plant material at Country Crops, Budson's, Dufferin Garden Centre, Country Garden Concrete, Meadowville Garden Centre, and Snowberry Botanicals, and a discount on the bus trip to Niagara. http://www.eringardenclub.ca/ The 2018 opening of my seed library will be at an eco film night at the Legion, Wed Match 21. The movie “The Peel Project” starts at 7. Afterwards, I will put one box at the centre 2000 library and have to other one to take to events. Please let me know if you would like me to visit with the seed library. Please fill out a sheet when you borrow from the library so that I can keep track of what is going out. Please borrow from the library even if you didn't have anything to return last year, and please tell your friends about it. It is only a good idea if people use it! I have gotten some nice donations in, and went to a seed exchange as well. I have done a lot of work on the website, so check that out please. Lastly, Martin, Steffi and I are holding a “Seedy Saturday” in Erin on April 7th from 11am to 3pm. It will be in the basement of Erin United Church. We are getting vendors who sell seeds, garden products, and maple syrup to name a few. We'll have a seed exchange table, rock painting and kids crafts. Free admission – please come! Thank you very much for everyone's support! I hope you will come to the seed talk, the opening and the Seedy Saturday! And most importantly, borrow from my seed library!! Grow something new! Give it a try. Grow something you would like to eat, or something to make your space more beautiful. I am so excited spring is coming!!!! I hope you will have a great season in your garden!! Take care, Seed you soon!! Jen Oh! One more thing. The In The Hills magazine said they would write about my seed library in their spring issue!! Very exciting!! Maybe it is just a line or 2, I don't know, but look for that!! Also if you would like off this e-mailing list, please just let me know! Hi everyone! Jan 23, 2018
The good news is there will be a seed talk on Wed Feb 28th at 7:30 pm, Wellington Room at Centre 2000. Joanne Howes and I will be talking about how to start plants from seeds and how to collect and save seeds in the fall. The bad news is that the talk is only open to members of the Erin Garden Club. But there is more good news! Garden Club membership is only $10. With that membership you get discounts at Country Crops, Budsons and other fantastic places. There are other great talks, the first one is this Wed, called The Gems of the Bruce Trail. On March 28th it will be "Successful vegetable gardening." April's talk is on Hellebores, and June's is about Irises. There are also 3 workshops. In May there is Plant an herb container, July is the Kindness Rock Project, and there will be a Christmas one. There are flower shows and photography shows that are judged and ribbons are given out. There is a supply fee for the workshops, but the rest is covered in the $10 membership, and that is a lot. I wanted to send this out now in case anyone wanted to join and go to the first meeting which is this Wed Jan 24th at 7:30. It is in the Wellington Room which is just off the arena lobby at cenre 2000. That is also Bring a Friend day, so if you just want to try it out, or hear about the Bruce Trail, you can go as a friend and not get a membership. Only that one though! Doesn't work for my seed talk – I tried! I don't have a date set yet for the reopening of the seed library. I think it will be in March. If you have any seeds still to return or donate to the library, there is still a drop box in the centre 2000 book library. It is on the window sill, by the plants. Please label as well as you can. Thank you very much! More good news is that Martin Rudd and I are setting up a Seedy Saturday for Erin. Bigger centres have them, and Everdale used to have one, but they are not doing it anymore. It is like a little garden show with vendors that sell seeds or garden supplies or seedling plants. There is a table for seed exchanges where you can take as much as you have brought. There will be some kids crafts and seed education, and my seed library will be there. Fergus has a Seedy Saturday on March 17th and Guelph is on March 25th, Erin's Seedy Saturday will be Sat April 7th from 11-3 in the basement of the Erin United Church. We are still looking for vendors, so let me know if you are interested in selling anything. I hope you will all come as patrons! Entrance is free! There is also the Guelph Organic Conference this weekend which might interest some of you. You have to pay for the seminars, but the trade show is free. https://guelphorganicconf.ca/ That is all the news for now, and most of it was Good!!! Take care, I hope to see you soon! Jen One Kind Word Can Change Someone's Entire Day Hi Everyone!! Dec 10, 2017
Thank you so much for your interest in the seed library! I lent out over 250 packets of seeds! That is amazing! Thank you! I hope that you were able to try growing something, and that you had some success. I would love to hear how things went if you have time to tell me! I took the seeds out of the box when it got too late to plant, but then someone asked me for milkweed seeds, so I put some of those at the library. They need to go through a winter to germinate, so you can plant them now or put them in the freezer for at least a month. There are 2 packs left if anyone wants them. I also put some garlic in the seed library. That you plant now (before the ground freezes!), and it will be ready to harvest when its leaves turn brown next August. Plant single cloves, and it will grow into a bulb with several cloves. It is pretty easy. When the leaves go curly in July, you cut that part off. Those are scapes and you can eat them. I put the cloves in the drop box. They are not huge, but free is good. The book library needed their space back, but then I got a whole bunch of seeds donated (thanks Steffi!), so they said I can keep a box in the library if it is over on the window sill by the plants. I was very happy about this! So it has been relocated, but is still in the Erin book library, at centre 2000. There is just one box as a drop box and I left the milkweed seeds and garlic in there. I will do a grand reopening in the spring with oodles of seeds! I hope! If you borrowed from the seed library when I was at Erin United Church, Ballinafad United Church, or Erin All Saints Anglican Church, the kind ministers there have said they will accept seeds for the library and pass them on to me, if it is easier for you to return seeds to those locations. I am at Erin playgroup 3-4 mornings a week, and at the library program Weds mornings. There is lots of time still to get seeds to me if you were able to collect some. Please dry them, and label them as completely as you can. It is great to know if they are organic or not, heritage?, grown in Erin?, as well as the variety and harvest date. Thank you very very much! Remember, you don't have to return the same type of seeds to me. You can find something else! There are some links to seed saving information on my website: www.erinseedlendinglibrary.weebly.com (Here! Last tab!) There is also going to be a speaker at an Erin Garden Club meeting early next year who will discuss growing plants from seed and also saving seeds at harvest time. I will send info when it is confirmed. And Maybe an Erin "Seedy Saturday" in the spring. I hope that you will borrow from the library again next spring whether you had seeds to return or not. If you have already given me some seeds, thank you very much, I really really appreciate it! Thank you very much for connecting with the Erin Seed Library. It is only a great idea if there are people using it!! Please take some garlic! It is getting late for that, I meant to send this a while ago! Have a great winter! Take care, Jen Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible. Dalai Lama |
